How to prepare for a coaching session: a reflective approach

As a coach, preparing for a session goes beyond reviewing client notes and setting goals. It’s about intentionally choosing your focus, tuning into the present moment, and creating a space for real transformation. Here’s a simple yet powerful 5-step process to help you prepare effectively for each coaching session.

1. Center Yourself
Take a few deep breaths or do whatever you do to ground yourself in the present moment. Sometimes, a few minutes of quiet reflection or mindfulness can set the tone for the session. Let go of any distractions and bring your attention fully to the client and what they would like to achieve.

2. Recall the Client’s Journey
Review any notes or insights from past sessions. Focus on their progress, challenges, and any major turning points they shared. Remember, coaching is about their journey. Keeping this perspective allows you to hold a space that is responsive and empathetic to where they are right now and to where they would like to go.

3. Set Your Intention
Think about what kind of presence you want to bring into the session. Is it a calm and supportive energy? Or perhaps a more curious, inquisitive stance? Setting an intention helps create a grounded and purposeful environment for the conversation.

4. Prepare to Listen Deeply
Listening is at the core of coaching. Remind yourself to approach the session with an open mind, free of assumptions or biases. Commit to listening not only to their words but also to their tone and the pauses in between. Remind yourself to listen with solution focused ears: listening for what is wanted and for what is already possible.

5. Clear Expectations for Yourself
While the client’s growth is the primary focus, it’s also important to recognize that you are a partner in this journey. Set realistic expectations for yourself, allowing room for flexibility and spontaneity. Trust the coaching process and your skills—remain open to where the conversation leads, rather than following a rigid agenda. Leave aside any need to perform: be a good human being first.

By following these five steps, you can create a thoughtful and focused space that allows your clients to truly benefit from the coaching session. With this preparation, every coaching conversation can become a meaningful and impactful experience, centered around the client’s growth and discovery.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
